Department of Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy is the medical science with the focus of decreasing pain to restore a person to an optimal level of movement and function resulting from an injury to a specific body part or system to return the person to their activities of daily living. At Temple Physical Therapy, our licensed occupational therapist hold a strong commitment to help the people served to engage in their daily routines by teaching compensatory methods to complete tasks when needed to prevent further injury and help to restore function. Our staff uses a variety of methods with advanced degrees and training in ergonomics, sensory integration techniques, McKenzie methods, functional strength training, splinting, adaptive equipment, cognitive skills and more. The main goal of our staff is to restore each person the their maximum level of function to carry out their daily activities at optimal pain-free level of function utilizing a variety of techniques custom designed to meet the individual persons needs.
Who will benefit from occupational therapy? An individual of all ages who demonstrates a decrease in functional ability to carry out daily living skills (i.e. washing, dressing, walking, home management, job functions, driving etc.) due to an acute or chronic injury to any tendon, muscle, ligament, or bone in the spine or extremities. The person may also suffer from neurological disorder, medical disorder or developmental delay which affects the person’s ability to function at their age appropriate level with various school tasks such as handwriting, fine motor coordination, and attention to tasks. The decrease in function may also be associated with a loss in range of motion of a joint, joint mobility, muscle strength, endurance, coordination, balance, or an increase in pain.

How can occupational therapy benefit an injury/dysfunction? Our occupational therapist at Temple Physical Therapy utilize scientifically proven techniques including various techniques to treat sensory integration deficits, therapeutic exercises, joint mobilizations, passive modalities (if needed), and functional activities to treat the injured tissues or structures to promote proper healing. Our staff will focus to strengthen the muscles associated with the involved area to stabilize the injured area and then educate the patient in various ways to promote proper body mechanics to protect and properly utilized the injured area to decrease the risk of re-injury, with the overall goal of returning the person to a fully functional lifestyle.
